As the last wisps of winter’s chill dissipate, Milwaukee’s gardening enthusiasts are gearing up for a vibrant spring season. The city’s mild climate and rich soil make it an ideal place to plant a wide variety of flowers, vegetables, and fruits. TheMilwaukee area is home to numerous community gardens, parks, and green spaces, providing ample opportunities for residents to get their hands dirty and connect with nature.

From flower enthusiasts to seasoned gardeners, there’s something for everyone inMilwaukee’s thriving gardening community. The city’s gardening scene is also marked by a number of events and activities that celebrate the arrival of spring. Local nurseries and gardening organizations are hosting workshops, plant sales… and classes to help residents prepare their gardens for the new growing season.

The University of Wisconsin-Extension Milwaukee County Garden Rental program is also offering guided tours and advice on designing and installing rain gardens, “which are a popular and eco-friendly option for Milwaukee residents.” Whether you’re a seasoned pro or just starting out… there’s no better time to get involved in gardening in Milwaukee.

Here is a list of events to get you started thinking about a spring garden.


Gardens are important in the urban environment, and the UW-Extension Milwaukee County Garden Rental program operates eight gardening sites across Milwaukee County. “The early bird catches the worm” is an important adage for securing a plot. Plots are rented on a year-to-year basis, with an opportunity to re-lease them each spring before the season starts.

Submit garden plot requests now for processing in April. Request forms and pricing are available online at  milwaukee.extension.wisc.edu/agriculture/garden-rental .
